Usage and nuance
The kanji read as "dark" plus "kill": a killing done in secret. 暗殺者 (ansatsusha) is "assassin", and 暗殺する is "to assassinate".
In Assassination Classroom the word is routine homework: 暗殺の計画進めようぜ, "let's move ahead with the assassination plan". Soul Eater gets comedy out of Black Star, who comes from a clan of assassins and is the loudest person in every room.
For a plain killing anime uses 殺す (korosu) and 殺し (koroshi). 暗殺 adds planning, a target and secrecy, which is why it suits spies and ninja stories.
