Usage and nuance
Spy x Family uses 任務 for Loid's operation, and Violet Evergarden for Violet's military past. Naruto's ninja take ranked 任務. The word has an official, impersonal ring, which is why characters hide behind it.
ミッション (mission) exists too, but it sounds like a video game. 任務 is what a superior assigns you.
Related: 任せる (makaseru) is "to entrust", and 任せろ ("leave it to me") is the confident line before a hero takes over.
