Yappari (やっぱり): what it means in anime

やっぱり

やっぱり · yappari · after all; in the end; as one would expect JLPT N2

Yappari means "as I thought", "after all" or "sure enough". It confirms an expectation: やっぱり来た ("you came after all"), やっぱりね ("I knew it").

Usage and nuance

The casual forms are やっぱ (yappa) and the fuller やはり (yahari), which is more formal. All three mean the same thing. Anime characters use やっぱ for quick asides and やはり for grave conclusions.

It also means "on second thought" when changing your mind: やっぱりやめる is "actually, I'll stop". Watch for it in restaurant orders and in confessions that get retracted.

Nana and K-On use it in everyday chatter, so it is a good early word to learn for natural-sounding reactions.
