Usage and nuance

This is the pronoun textbooks teach first, and in anime it is what female characters say by default. When a male character uses 私 casually, it reads as very formal, refined or deliberately distant, like a butler or a company president.

The same kanji is read わたくし (watakushi) in extremely formal speech. Noble or ceremonious characters use it, and it is the easiest way to sound like a princess or a politician.

You will hear 私 constantly, so it is worth noticing when it is dropped. Japanese omits pronouns whenever the subject is obvious, and a character who keeps saying 私 may be stressing "me, personally".
