Yatta (やった): "I did it!" in anime

やった

やった · yatta

Yatta is what you shout when you’re pleased: "I did it!", "We did it!" or just "Yay!" Literally, it means "did (it)", the past tense of やる (yaru), a casual verb for "to do".

Word by word

やるやるto do (casual)
たたpast tense

Ways to celebrate or give praise

Stretch it out as やったー! for pure joy. やったぜ sounds tough and is mostly used by men. Say やったね to someone else for "You did it!" or "We did it!" A teacher or parent can praise someone with よくやった, "Well done."

When you’ve messed up

やっちゃった (yacchatta) means "I messed up". The ちゃう ending gives it a sense of regret.
