From a plea to an order
やめて is a plea to "stop it", often said by someone upset. Angry male characters typically use the blunt command やめろ (yamero): "Stop!" やめてください (yamete kudasai) is the polite "Please stop."
As a warning, やめとけ (yametoke) means "Don’t even try" or "Leave it."
Quitting a job or habit
The verb also covers quitting: 会社を辞める means "to quit the company", and たばこをやめる means "to quit smoking".
