どうしてDoushite: what it means in anime
どうして · doushite
why
Doushite means "why". It sits between casual なんで (nande) and formal なぜ (naze), and it often sounds emotional: どうして? is "but why?".

Usage and nuance
Angel Beats! repeats it in panic: どうして?どうして止まらない?, "why? why won't it stop?". Violet Evergarden asks a question in earnest, どうしてこの仕事をしたいの?, "why do you want this job?".
Detectives and narrators prefer なぜ, as in Death Note's なぜ日本なんだ?, "why Japan?". Friends say なんで. どうして fits both.
Add も and it changes meaning: どうしても is "no matter what" or "at all costs", as in どうしても行きたい, "I really want to go".
