Hazu (はず): what it means in anime

はず

はず · hazu · should; bound; expected JLPT N4

Hazu means "should be" or "is supposed to". It expresses strong expectation: 来るはずだ ("he should be coming"), そんなはずはない ("that can't be"), 勝てるはずだった ("we were supposed to win").

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

The negative そんなはずない is a stock line of disbelief, close to まさか. Bleach, Psycho-Pass and Fullmetal Alchemist all use it when a plan fails.

It is a grammatical noun, so it attaches to the plain form of a verb or adjective and takes だ after it. 知っているはず is "he must know".

Compare べき (beki), which is "should" as in "ought to". はず is about expectation, べき about obligation.
