Anta (あんた): what it means in anime

あんた

あんた · anta · you (casual, often rude) Not on JLPT lists

Anta is a casual, slightly brash "you", a worn-down form of あなた. Friends, spouses and anyone picking a fight say it; it is not for strangers or superiors.

Where you hear it 19 of 42 series

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Also in: Angel Beats!, Naruto, Re:Zero, Assassination Classroom, Soul Eater, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Jujutsu Kaisen, KonoSuba, Your Lie in April, Bleach, Noragami.

Usage and nuance

The tone depends entirely on the relationship. From a mother to her child or between old friends it is warm and familiar. Shouted at an opponent it is dismissive. Subtitles flatten all of this to "you".

It is common in the speech of blunt female characters: Taiga in Toradora, Nana, Winry in Fullmetal Alchemist. Male characters tend to reach for お前 or てめえ instead when they want the same casual edge.

If you want to address someone in Japanese, avoid both あんた and あなた and use their name plus さん. Pronouns for "you" are a minefield; names are always safe.
