Usage and nuance

It is the word anime uses for identity questions: 自分は何者だ ("who am I?"), 自分らしく ("like yourself, true to yourself"). Tokyo Ghoul, Violet Evergarden and Erased all turn on a character finding their 自分.

In the Kansai dialect and in sports teams, 自分 is also used as "I" or even "you", which confuses everyone. Haikyu's players and Spy x Family's Yor use it as a first-person pronoun.

自分勝手 (jibun-katte) means "selfish", and 自分自身 is "one's own self", used for emphasis.
