Usage and nuance
It is a mother's word and a coach's word. Haikyu's coaches tell players to ちゃんと do the basics; Toradora's Taiga is nagged about ちゃんと eating. In romance it appears in ちゃんと言う, "to say it properly", meaning to confess clearly.
ちゃんとした before a noun means "proper, decent": ちゃんとした仕事 is a proper job, ちゃんとした人 a respectable person.
The near-synonym きちんと (kichinto) is a touch more formal and neat. ちゃんと is the spoken default.
