How to say “I” in Japanese: 私, 僕, 俺 and the character voices
In Japanese the word for “I” tells you who is speaking: their gender, age, mood and sometimes where they grew up. Anime leans on this hard, so a character’s pronoun is often the fastest clue to who they are.
Short answer: If you are learning, use 私 (watashi). It is correct for everyone in polite situations and for women in all of them. 僕 and 俺 are what men switch to with friends; うち and わし are mostly character voices in anime.

Should men say watashi or boku?
In polite or formal situations, 私. With friends many men use 僕 or 俺; 僕 sounds softer and younger, 俺 more casual and assertive. Starting with 私 is never wrong.
Why do so many anime boys say ore?
Because 俺 signals a confident, blunt, masculine character, which is what most shounen leads are. Male friends use it in real life too, but not in front of a boss or a customer.
Who says washi?
In anime, old men: elders, masters, grandfathers. It also survives in some regional dialects, which is why a rural character may use it.
