Usage and nuance

Learn the set phrases rather than the word alone: 気になる (to be on one's mind, to be curious about), 気に入る (to like), 気が合う (to get along), 気が強い (strong-willed), 気のせい (just your imagination). Anime dialogue is full of all of them.

In battle shounen 気 is also the energy fighters sense and release, as in Dragon Ball. Hunter x Hunter calls its version 念 (nen) instead, but the idea comes from 気.

The same character is in 元気 (genki, healthy, energetic), 天気 (tenki, weather) and 人気 (ninki, popularity).
