Koitsu (こいつ): what it means in anime

こいつ

こいつ · koitsu · this guy; this one (casual) Not on JLPT lists

Koitsu means "this guy" or "this one" and points at someone right next to the speaker. It is blunt, often teasing or hostile, and never polite.

Where you hear it 16 of 42 series

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Also in: One-Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100, Haikyu!!, Hunter x Hunter, Erased, Bleach, Vinland Saga, Dr. Stone.

Usage and nuance

Characters say こいつ about a friend they are introducing roughly ("this idiot here"), about an opponent in front of them, or even about an object. Luffy introducing his crew and Bakugo talking about Deku are both こいつ.

Because it is so direct, it works as an insult on its own. こいつ! shouted at someone is "you little...!" rather than "this person".

Its polite cousin is こちら (kochira), which is how you introduce a colleague. The gap between こいつ and こちら is the whole spectrum of Japanese politeness in one pair of words.
