Otoko means "man" or "male". Anime loves it in lines about manliness, like 男なら, "if you call yourself a man".

Where you hear it

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

男の子 is "boy" and 男の人 is the neutral "man". On its own 男 can sound blunt or rough, the way "that guy" or "a man" does in English.

男らしい is "manly", and 男だろ! is "be a man!", a push to stop whining. Shounen anime uses these lines without irony.

The pair is 女 (onna), "woman", which on its own also sounds blunt; 女の人 and 女の子 are the softer forms.
