Where you hear it

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

いい is irregular: in other forms it goes back to its older shape よい, so "not good" is よくない and "it was good" is よかった. よかった on its own is the relieved "thank goodness" after danger.

いい can accept or refuse depending on tone. いいです with a falling voice in a shop means "no thanks, I'm fine", which confuses learners who expect it to mean yes.

Compliments use it too: いい人 is "a good person", which in romance anime is sometimes a gentle rejection, "you're a nice guy, but..."
