ちょっとChotto: what it means in anime

ちょっと · chotto

a little; just a moment

JLPT N5Everyday speech26 of 42 series

Chotto means "a little" or "just a moment". It is also the polite way to refuse: ちょっと... with a pause means "that's a bit difficult", which really means no.

Where you hear it

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

ちょっと待って is "wait a second", and ちょっと見せて is "let me have a look". In these it shrinks the request to make it easier to accept.

Shouted, ちょっと! is "hey!" or "hold on!", the thing a character yells when someone grabs their food or walks off mid-argument.

The trailing ちょっと... is the hard one for learners. Japanese avoids a flat no, so "Can you come Saturday?" "土曜はちょっと..." politely closes the door.
