Anata means "you". Textbooks teach it as the polite word, but in real conversation Japanese speakers usually avoid it and use the person's name instead.

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

Calling someone あなた to their face can feel distant or even cold, because it singles them out. It is fine in writing, in ads and when talking to someone whose name you do not know.

In anime you hear it most from wives to husbands, where it means "dear", and from formal or slightly aloof characters. A girl who calls a boy あなた instead of his name is usually keeping him at arm's length.

あんた is the casual, sharper version of the same word. When anime characters drop from あなた to あんた, the conversation has turned impatient or rude.
