誰Dare: what it means in anime

だれ · dare

who

JLPT N5Everyday speech30 of 42 series

Dare means "who". 誰だ! is "who's there?!" and お前は誰だ is "who are you?", two of the most common lines in any mystery or action scene.

Where you hear it

Lines from the Japanese subtitles of episodes 1–3 of each show. A translation is shown only when it clearly matches the line; counts are subtitle lines containing the word.

Usage and nuance

The polite version is どなた (donata). 誰 is neutral, and 誰だ with だ sounds rough and alarmed.

Add か and it becomes "someone": 誰か助けて is "somebody help!". Add も with a negative and it becomes "nobody": 誰もいない is "there is no one here".

誰のせいだ is "whose fault is this?", and 誰にも言うな is "don't tell anyone", both staples of dramatic dialogue.
